The short answer
F5Bot is a free keyword alert tool for Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. The main alternatives are Syften for paid monitoring across many more communities, Brand24 for full social listening, Redreach for Reddit lead threads, PainOnSocial for pain points, and Ghostlaunch's free search to see who's asking about your idea right now.
What F5Bot is
F5Bot watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for the keywords you choose and sends you an alert when one appears in a new post or comment. Its site says it checks every few minutes and emails alerts instantly, on a delay or as a daily digest.
When we checked, the free plan covered keyword alerts on all three sites with email notifications, and was described as free forever with no card. Silver, at $9.99 a month, added 20 keywords, advanced filters and full post text; Gold, at $49.99 a month, added 200 keywords, RSS and JSON feeds, AI filtering and Slack and Discord.
Why people look for an alternative
F5Bot does one job, alerts on exact keywords, and does it cheaply. People look elsewhere when they need something it isn't built for: more places than Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters; smarter matching than keywords, which miss posts that describe a problem in other words; or help with what comes after the alert, such as replying, ranking pain points or testing an idea.
Keyword alerts also arrive one at a time. If you're trying to decide whether to build something, a stream of individual mentions is harder to read than a set of posts gathered around your idea.

The alternatives, one by one
- Syften
- The closest step up: alerts like F5Bot's, across many more places, including Reddit, X, Indie Hackers, Hacker News, GitHub, Product Hunt, Stack Exchange, forums, newsletters and the wider web. Plans run from $29.95 to $119.95 a month, with a 14-day free trial of the top plan and no card needed.
- Brand24
- A full social listening tool for brands: it monitors social networks, Reddit, news, blogs, reviews, YouTube, TikTok and podcasts, and adds analysis on top. It's priced for companies, from $199 a month billed yearly ($249 monthly), with a 14-day free trial and no card.
- Redreach
- Built for one job: finding Reddit threads where people ask for product recommendations, often ones that rank on Google, and suggesting replies you post from your own account. Its site lists plans by number of seats and a paid 3-day pass, without plan prices on the page.
- PainOnSocial
- Instead of alerts, it scans subreddits you choose over 7, 30 or 90 days and ranks the pain points that keep coming up, with quotes and links. Starter is $19 a month after a 7-day trial.
- Ghostlaunch's free search
- We make this one. Rather than matching keywords, describe your idea: it works out the words people use for the problem, searches Reddit's past week and shows up to 10 posts that match strongly, with links. It's free with no sign-up, and Ghostlaunch can then run a 7-day landing page test for the idea.
How to choose
If F5Bot's three sites and exact keywords are enough, keep using it: the free plan is hard to beat. If you need more places, Syften is the natural next step, and Brand24 suits a company that needs listening across social media with reports for a team.
If the alerts are for a specific job, pick the tool built for it. Redreach is for replying to people asking for recommendations; PainOnSocial is for finding problems worth solving. And if you're watching Reddit to decide whether to build something, a set of posts gathered around your idea is easier to judge than a stream of mentions. That's what Ghostlaunch's free search shows.

Questions
Is F5Bot free?
Yes. When we checked, F5Bot's free plan covered keyword alerts on Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters by email, described as free forever with no card. Paid plans added more keywords, full post text and filters, from $9.99 a month for Silver to $49.99 a month for Gold.
What is the best F5Bot alternative?
For alerts across more communities, Syften. For full social listening, Brand24. For Reddit threads where people ask for recommendations, Redreach. If you're checking demand for an idea rather than tracking a keyword, Ghostlaunch's free search shows Reddit posts from the past week that describe the problem.
Does F5Bot monitor Reddit comments?
Yes. F5Bot says it alerts you when your keyword appears in a new post or comment on Reddit, Hacker News or Lobsters, checking every few minutes. Alerts arrive by email, instantly, on a delay or in a daily digest, depending on your settings.
Why do keyword alerts miss relevant posts?
Because people describe problems in their own words, not yours. Someone who needs an invoice reminder tool might write about clients paying late without ever using your keyword. Tools that match the meaning of a post, or that search with the phrases people use for a problem, catch more of them.
See who's already asking
Describe your idea and see real posts from people asking for a fix, for free. If you want, Ghostlaunch runs the 7-day test for you.
